The Tyson Zone

There's crazy. There's "out of his mind". There's "he's just fucking nuts". And then there's Mike Tyson.

A funny and scary walk down Memory Lane.

Wow! LOL.

It's amazing to think we all thought, at one point, that Tyson was the coolest guy on the planet. Funny how perceptions change over time.

I remember watching the Tyson vs. Holyfield live in Daff's backyard and Moon insisting (prior to the fight) that Tyson was going to kill Holyfield. I remember how disappointed Moon was when Tyson bit Holyfield's ear. I guess Hall thought that Tyson "didn't have it in him, did he? Treemis what!"

The movie that just came out about him was amazing...it's available to watch on Netflix at any time...

Poor thing...You're right, Ev. I have this weird thing about heroes. I like the idea of them existing and I get disappointed when they fail or fall from grace. Tyson is one example. The night I heard on the news that he lost to Buster Douglass, I got mad angry. When Tiger Woods got busted (again and again and again) I was disappointed too. Heck, there's part of me that was sad when Peyton Manning threw that pick in the Super Bowl when everyone was expecting him to lead them to a win. Not sure why, I probably should examine the root of those emotions. But that's how I get. Maybe there's something comforting about the idea of heroes. It's like what Chris Rock's character said to Eddie Murphy in Boomerang when Eddie got played by Robin Givens: "first the Fat Boys break up and now this. There's nothing to believe in..."

Of the several moments featured in the montage, which do you think is the most jarring / most irrational?

i'd have to say the post-fight interview when he alternates between praising Allah and pledging to eat Lennox's offspring. The "my style is ferocious, my defense impregnable!" line was classic. Never gets old.

"Yo Marcus, me and some of the minimum wage brothers down in the mail room are wondering about howwww long it's gonna take for you to bone that new executris. See, I gotta know, cause we have an office pool going on."

"Look, Jacqueline and I are professionals, and it's totally professional. Remain professional."

"So what you sayin, it's gonna take, what, a week? Not you, Marcus, you da man! C'mon, Marcus!"

I find the moment where the female reporter asks him a question and he says, "Are you talking out of turn? I usually don't do interviews with women unless I fornicate with them. So you shouldn't talk anymore. Unless you want to, you know" to be jarring, given that he's spent years in jail for rape.

That might be Chris Rock's funniest movie appearance ever.

It's not outlandish, but my favorite Mike Tyson line was toward the end of his career when the reporter what he was gonna go next he says, "I don't know. Maybe I'll just fade into Bolivian."

I was watching that Tyson fight with my dad. I remember how shocked he was.

PS - The movie that MMG mentioned is amazing. You should watch it if you haven't seen it.

To clarify, I watched the Tyson-Douglas fight with my dad. And he we shocked, as were all of us, when he went down.

That's funny that you remember that, Chuck. There are a few big events like that, where I'll most likely never forget where I was when I got the news:

1. 9/11
2. Tyson KO'd by a Buster
3. Magic HIV news

Every generation has 'em. Just goes to show you what an iconic figure Tyson was in his prime. As Evan said, it's REALLY FUNNY how perceptions change over time. If he'd somehow retired (pulled a Floyd Mayweather) or died in a plane crash (God forbid) before that Buster Douglas fight, we would probably be mentioning him among the all time greats.
