Ghosts of Teachers Past

I haven't shaved in weeks and have grown a full beard. This beard has some gray hairs scattered throughout. I'm only 35!

ANYWAY... as we all get older, memories of the past, unfortunately, start to fade - at least from conscious thought. Maybe all of those memories still are in our brains somewhere - like a vast file cabinet whose older papers just continue to get shoved backwards and are sitting there somewhere wrinkled and pressed together, but with the right stimulus, could be retrieved and revisited.

I was sitting here wondering if I remember not only who all of my high school teachers were, but even the classes I took each year in high school. I didn't think about this post ahead of time - I am going to try to type this and remember this information while I do it. I better start from 12th grade and work backwards. Some of this is probably inaccurate.

12th grade:
- SSMCIS (Math) - Dr. Decovsky
- AP Computer Science - Mr. Hanna
- AP English - Mrs. Twombly
- Science - AP Chemistry - Mr. Hali
- Study Hall
- Gym (I remember having Mr. Gardner, Mr. Cardell, and...? Don't remember which year was which. And I only remember Mr. Cardell because he did one-handed pushups once which I found impressive for an older guy.)
- Lunch
- No History or Foreign Language
(There is an open slot, I believe...?)

11th grade:
- SSMCIS (Math) - Mrs. Townsend?
- Computer Science - Mrs. Isaacs (I used to drive her insane)
- Science - Honors Physics - Dr. Arzt (I used to drive him insane also)
- Spanish - Ms. Torres (where I first met the Daffinator, who used to bring crosswords to class and demonstratively do them)
- Lunch
- Gym (see above note about teachers)
- English - Mr. Shanken? (this guy went to the same health club as me my senior year - Bally's in Fort Lee. One time I ran into him in the locker room and he was naked. Talk about awkward.)
- History - Mr. Burroughs. (He was a newer teacher.)

10th grade:
- SSMCIS (Math) - Mr. Elliot
- German - Ms. Mayers
- Spanish - Mrs. Taltavull?
- Science - Chemistry - Mr. Czeterko (future Superintendent of Teaneck schools)
- English - A woman named Mrs. Sumner who was older and apparently tripped over her cat and fell down a flight of stairs, causing her to miss a huge chunk of the year
- History - ?
- Gym
- Lunch
- Theater - Mrs. Johnson

9th grade:
- SSMCIS (Math) - Mrs. Delaplain
- German - Mrs. Mayers
- Science - Biology - Mrs. Jones, a red-haired woman?
- Gym
- Lunch
- History - ?
- English - ?
- Theater - Mrs. Walker

Some notes:

- I'd love to get a high school transcript to not only see my grades, but all my teachers to see how well I did on this list. Additionally, I'd love to see my disciplinary file, which was not replete with infractions but did have a couple of major incidents.

- The difference between honors and non-honors courses is striking. I remember being a kid and seeing a noticeable difference in accomplishments, classmates, classroom environment, etc... between my honors/AP subjects (Math, English, Science, Computer Science) and non-honors (foreign languages, social studies). Having taught everything in my 12 years of teaching from general levels (many, many times) to AP Calculus, I see the same differences now, and there doesn't seem to be much a teacher can do about it.

- Did we only have 8 time slots during the day? I thought we had 9. I believe it was 9.

- At age 25, I probably would have been able to recall this all accurately, fully, and with more detail.

- I think Teaneck's teaching staff was older than other towns - Teaneck was probably an attractive district to teach in the early 90s and teachers probably stayed there for a while. I don't remember too many teachers in their 20s, whereas a couple of the districts I've taught in have plenty of younger teachers.

- Interesting to think of these people as human beings, as well as teachers, now that I am one.

- I am interested to share more anecdotes and hear what other people remember about their high school setup. However, since I'm not sure if anybody reads this blog anymore, I won't go into more detail until somebody responds.

Holy first blog post in forever Batman!

That's a pretty impressive list for a guy who usually has trouble remembering what happened the last time he hung out with someone!

Btw, high school had 7 periods, 5th was a double period and you either had lunch first or 2nd... I'm surprised you don't remember that given how many years you took 2 lunches with a cleverly dropped class/study hall!

Here's my list...

9th grade...
-Theatre 1 (Ms. Johnson)
-Honors Math, AMS-9 (Ms. Minkowitz)
-Honors English (I. Ball) blub
-Gym/Tan/Laundry (aka Health, lab, peer leadership)
-Honors Biology (Ms. Jones, rumor was she had a PhD and did her doctoral thesis on the effects of LSD on fruit flies!)
- Honors History (Mr. Gruber)
- French 9 (Mr. Arone)

10th...
- Driver's Ed (Mr. Vouno, best.class.ever!)/ health/study hall/gym
- Honors Chemistry (Mr. Mathews after he replace Dr. Whatley)
- Modern European History (Mr. Chupak)
- Honors Math (not the top one tho, Ms. Rosenbaum)
- Programming in Basic (Mr. Hanna)
- Honors English (Ms. Twombly)
- French 10 (Ms. Mayers)

11th...
- Phsychology (Mr. Wolf)
- A.P. History 1 (Ms. Borrin)
- Honors English (Ms. Berger)
- Gym, health, study hall
- Honors Physics (Dr. Arzt replaced by Ms. Buffano in Feb.)
- Honors Pre-Calculus (Ms. Isaacs)
- Honors French (Dr. Dowd)

12th...
- A.P. English (Mr. Valmoro)
- Gym, Health, Study Halls
- A.P. Calculus AB (Ms. Minkowitz)
- Another Study Hall (I tried to pull a Max but it didn't really work for me, I had to take 2 lunches piecemeal, I think)
- A.P. French (Dr. Dowd)
- Shakespeare (Mr. Valmoro)
- A.P. History II (Dr. Gallo -- I'm not Jerry Gallo, I'm Jerry CALLO, C-A-L-L-O!)

Yeah, I may have not got the order entirely correctly, and as I put it together I had to stop and and do it backwards, from 7th to 1st, or what was around lunch and then figure out what was missing that year. I think I did it pretty good tho.

And I feel you about thinking about teachers as people and not just a figureheads in the front of the classroom but it's hard for me. Btw, they make Just For Men to cover the greys! Also, I wonder if it's possible to get a copy of your old disciplinary file? Are there really permanent records kept by high schools for so long? I'd like to see mine while I'm thinking of it...but really, I know what's in there ;)

My schedule (to the best of my recollection) and the order (best I can remember, although I’m sure not entirely accurate)

Freshman

-Honors English (Shanken, but in my case he was fully clothed, thank god! :))
-Spanish 1(Ms. Cogorno)
-Honors History (Ms. Bello- B-E-L-L-O… wait, was that her name?)
-Theatre 1 (Ms. Walker)
-Geometry Honors (? - Cut all the time cause it was the other half of lunch)
-Physical Science (Guskind- What a joke class this was)
-Gym (B-L-U-B)

Sophomore

-Honors English (Mr. Valmoro)
-Algebra II and Trigonometry (No idea who the teacher was)
-Some History class- (What was the other history class you could take?)
-Spanish II (Mr. Jardines- Who had a hot daughter that went to my dad’s school)
-Driver’s Ed (that class was dope!)-
-Biology (That fat lady- name unknown)
-Gym (B-L-U-B)

Junior

- Psychology (Mr. Wolf- the most conceited High School teacher… ever)
-Honors English (Ms. Berger)
-A.P. History 1 (Ms. Borrin- Hated her)
-Chefs (which was a class where I think all we did was make cookies- Can this be right?)
-Chemistry (Ms. Heafy- who smoked like a chimney. Great class: Me, Skip, Nick Zaveri, Nino Filowitz)
-Pre-calculus (Mr. Elliot)
-Gym (B-L-U-B)

Senior

-Shakespeare (Valmoro)
-Psychology Seminar (Mr. Tankard- there was like 5 people in this class. Everyone dropped this class once they found out Mr. Wolf would not be teaching and only 5 kids remained)
- Statistics and Discrete Mathematics (I still have no idea what the study of Discrete Mathematics is. I forgot who taught stat, but Mr. Chu did the Discrete half of the year.)
- U.S. History II (Dr. G-A-L-L-0)
-Study Hall (which I cut almost every day)
-Gym (B-L-U-B)
?

What can I say. In 2011 they
made a Horror Movie at the Castle
on the Hill. Need I say more?

The teachers were all "Klan" and
most of the students were also. If
you didn't know this you'd end up
like me( suckered to a Klan NASA
Research Center and then thrown out because the Klan hates human Gentiles), or like Tom Hecks brother__shot to death.

Does anybody remember the Diggs family? They didn't like what the
Klan was doing to students at THS and they were killed. Hmmm? Nice town Teaneck.

I thought I was one of the cool stoners__you know, in a cool gang that was stoned most of the time but in reality I was the only human in the "Klan Gang". I was just like Tom Heck, picked on and
ridiculed but I didn't know it.
And, why was there a black former
army stoner in our gang? I was almost knifed to death for no reason. And, does anybody remember
Alan Battan when he was beaten to death on the front steps of THS?
Where is Alan?

And, the fake family from Teaneck?
They were not Italians or Armenians, they were "Klan" and I can prove they stole me from Christ Hospital. Why? They raise human suckers, sell their soles to the hives, and make it in our fake socieity.

From the streets of the "Klan"
City's of America searching for a public access TV studio so I can
produced and host "Contact US",

Most of the THS teachers were assholes. Especially Mr Valmoro and Dr Arzt. What a loser. A PhD teaching high school. Lol
